Turtory Fishings River Deveron

I have fished many beats on the Deveron but I have to say, this must be one of the prettiest.   Turtory is a single [right] bank fishery situated in the very picturesque middle part of the river, midway between Rothiemay and Turriff.

This idyllic beat has some of the nicest pools and best facilities found anywhere on the Deveron. Unlike many others, the banks here are very well kept, with no high grass to restrict casting and hidden dangers. Roads are very well maintained and access easy.

Pools are generally deep and make great holding water. Most pools can easily be fished from the bank and are easily covered with a 12’ – 15’ rod, depending on the time of year and height of water.

Having had a relaxed morning, around 10.30am, I set up a 12 and 15 foot prototype Hardy rod with a shooting head and extra fast sinking leader. The water was around a foot above summer level, a height which suited most pools on the beat.

The uppermost pool is called The Colonels and looked more of a summer, rather than spring pool.

Next was Upper Inchlyne, Situated right in front of the splendid and very well equipped fishing hut, this is a lovely looking pool with a steady flow and some depth to it. The first part, I fished with the 12 foot rod, but moved to the 15 footer half way down. This really was an impressive pool to fish and one which I felt a fresh fish would come to the fly at any minute. I could have possibly fished this with some form of sinking line as the 10’ extra fast sinking tip and “Swallow” tied on a No 2 Double never bottomed at all.

Named after the beat owner, The Alice Wilson Pool is a continuation of the afore mentioned pool, the flow at this height of water was perfect for fly-fishing. All in all this pool took around an hour to fish and had differing character all the way through. Anyone who knows anything about fly-fishing could not fail to be impressed with this piece of water. So simple to fish and the feeling of a fish each cast.

Middle and Lower Inchlyne – A croy provides added impetus to the water as it breaks from the Alice Wilson into the middle inchlyne. The river is very deep on the right bank [our side] and again, carries a fly well during higher water. Further down the pool deepens, providing one of the best holding pools in the whole of the middle Deveron. Shaded by trees this holds a multitude of fish throughout the season.

Although I did not have a fresh fish today, I did, never the less have an exciting time landing 12 and hooking even more Kelts in a couple of hours before snow melt saw the river clouding up and steadily rising. Ok, so not a fresh fish, but let me assure anyone, given the choice, nothing, or a two hours with a bent rod, I know what I would pick!! This is a beat which provides the angler with a very good chance of some fish at any time of the year, but because the river runs at a good level in the spring, I feel this is a really nice time to fish here.

The Swallow Fly proved yet again to be irresistible, and whilst I think Kelts will take a snap at pretty much anything, it was interesting this fly out fished the others by 4 to 1. As a spring fly, I find this second to none!

The beat is let as two rods but has a house rod also. The mile of fishing has more than enough pools to keep three rod occupied without crossing over. There is a very comfortable cottage which can be let with the fishing. The well equipped and very comfortable fishing hut has full toilet/washing, as well as cooking facilities, along with, for those fishing for Sea Trout, a bedroom upstairs. Mains electric is very welcome for those long evenings also. All in all, this represents some of the nicest fishing one could imagine, another piece of paradise here in Scotland. I will not divulge the average catch, but lets just say, it would put many four rod beats to shame!!!!

There are some weeks available at this time, but anyone wishing to fish this piece of water should look to be in touch very quickly as this time next year I can see no weeks available on a beat offering - exceptional fishing and truly exceptional value.

The perfect description would be - “The best kept secret on the Deveron”!

Hungry Hills Fishing River Deveron 2010

Hungry Hills is a lovely secluded 2 rod beat situated in the most productive part of the River Deveron.

The single bank [left] beat is located directly opposite Scatterty Fishing, once part of the Mountblairy fishing’s, which, over the years has produced a number of fish of over 30 and 40lbs, including one of 61lbs, the largest salmon caught on a fly in the UK.

As well as salmon, this fishing’s can offer some top quality Sea Trout during June and July. Again, on the Deveron, these tend to be quality fish, providing great evenings sport.
The fishing hut, which is situated on stilts high up the river bank, is well equipped and during the summer months can be stayed in overnight, obviously adding to the fishing experience!

I have a number of weeks during June, July, August, September and October.
The beat and its seven pools also lend itself perfectly to teaching fly-casting as well as fishing. This in mind, I will run a couple of courses in both June and July.
Having fished the Deveron since the age of eight qualifies me adequately to teach here in a fishing sense.

Tackle required ranges from rods of between 11’6” – 15’. Lines can range from Skagit /shooting head to full double taper. Sink tips tend to work very well on the Deveron. As with any river, depth of fly is very important and is often the difference between success and failure on any salmon fishing day.

Fly Size – This ranges from, in the spring, 1 inch copper tube/cone head, dressed to two inches long, to, in the summer, size 12, but tied with long tails. I have fished, lightly dressed, long tailed flies since the mid 1970s and found these to work best. Best colours are Orange and Black.

Most of this beat requires very little, if any, wading and is well maintained.

The River Deveron raises in the hills of the Cabrach, just above Dufftown, the whisky capital of Scotland, and flows into the Moray Firth around 30 miles east of the Spey.  The season runs from 11th Feb and ends on 31st Oct, the best of the fishing [for salmon] is usually September and October.

It is a river which boasts the largest ever fly caught salmon in the UK. The 61lb fish caught opposite Dunlugas at Mountblairy by Miss Tina Morrison in October 1924 and was reputedly even bigger than the one caught by Miss Ballintyne two years earlier, but unfortunately was not weighed until two days later.

Although not quite as large as these 5 SW monsters, 2008 saw numerous fish of over 20lbs and one of 38lb, the largest fish I heard of in Scotland this year.

The Dunlugas beat is around 2 miles in length and has ten named pools. It is located on the lower river between Turriff and Banff and is around 8 miles from the sea.  It comprises of single bank fishing over 1.5 miles then double bank over 0.5. Fishing is with fly only during October and, just as on the Tweed, given good water conditions, can offer rods a real chance of fresh fish right until the end of the season.  Pools are easily covered with a 13 – 14 foot rod and have some of the best and most safe wading of any river I know.  Having fished this river since I was a boy, it is a real favourite of mine and one which, Pro Rata, I have caught more fish than in any other river. For those who enjoy fishing medium to smaller rivers with safe wading, on its day, this can be Simply the Best!

Accommodation can be a comfortable 4 bedroom cottage perfectly situated within 200 yards of the beat. Lunches and Dinner can be arranged.  Hotel accommodation can also be arranged.
I will host the three days - Offering advice on how to fish small rivers, tackle, casting, pools and how to fish them. This will be booked on a first come, first serve basis. For prices, see price page.

I also have fishing further up-stream on the Upper Netherdale and Carnousie beats.  These Prime beats have never been let on a weekly basis before and total catch for the season exceeds 250 fish, most of which are caught between mid August and mid October.  Superior Accommodation is provided in a lodge with 4 rods sleeping eight or a cottage with 4 rods sleeping four persons.
